Alaska is the largest but also the least densely populated state. It is well known for a naturally occurring phenomenon called the Aurora Borealis. Residents studying in Alaska can observe this natural light show from August through April. Alaska is also known for its abundance of glaciers (large mountains of snow and ice jutting out of the ocean), which attract tourists throughout the year. The state is also recognized for excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, skiing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Community health centers and regional hospitals are pivotal to providing health and dental care to Alaskan natives. NYU Langone Dental Medicine’s health center affiliates are located in Anchorage and Juneau. In 2019, 10.1% of people in Alaska had incomes below the poverty line ($25,926 for a family of four) and 16.6% of people under age 65 and below 138% of the poverty line did not have health insurance. NYU Langone Dental Medicine and its health center affiliates help to ensure equitable and affordable dental care while enhancing and honing the skills of postdoctoral dental practitioners.
