Arizona has limitless options that make it an ideal setting for residents to study and explore both indoors and outside. The yearlong summer environment offers miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The Grand Canyon, one of the natural wonders of the world, is located in Arizona, along with the world’s largest Ponderosa pine tree forest. Its capital and largest city is Phoenix. It is known for its desert climate in its southern half, with very hot summers and mild winters. The northern half of the state features forests of pine, Douglas fir, and spruce trees; the Colorado Plateau; some mountain ranges (such as the San Francisco Mountains); as well as large, deep canyons, with much more moderate summer temperatures and significant winter snowfalls. There are ski resorts in the areas of Flagstaff, Alpine, and Tucson. About one-quarter of the state is made up of Indian Reservations that serve as the home of a number of Native American tribes. In 2019, 13.5% of people in Arizona had incomes below the poverty line ($25,926 for a family of four) and 19.0% of people under age 65 and below 138% of the poverty line did not have health insurance. NYU Langone Dental Medicine’s numerous health center partners in Arizona are located in the northern, central and southern parts of the state. NYU Langone Dental Medicine and its health center partners help to ensure equitable and affordable dental care while enhancing and honing the skills of postdoctoral dental practitioners.
