Become a leader in General Dentistry (AEGD) or Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry. Tri-County Community Action Agency provides comprehensive health and social services for families, particularly for the underserved and those of minority race/ethnicity and/or low-income. Located on the south side of Providence, in one of the state's poorest neighborhoods, the Center is a valuable community resource with outpatient clinics that offer high quality medical and dental services, along with educational programs that help families stay healthy. The Pediatric Dental Center offers comprehensive services ranging from routine dental care and emergency services, to nutrition and dental health education. The Dental Center also accepts children from birth to age twenty years for both preventative and restorative treatment. The Pediatric & Family Dental Center (PFDC), Tri-County Community Action Agency is home to NYU Langone's Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry programs in RI. In addition to the Providence site, the program operates at satellite sites in Pawtucket, Johnston, and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence, RI. Serving primarily low-income and underserved children, adults and communities statewide, the PFDC is located in one of the state's most underserved neighborhoods. Pediatric patients, from birth to age 18 years, are of diverse race and ethnicity (Hispanic, African-American, White/non-Hispanic, and Asian). Approximately 25% of patients have special health care needs including, but not limited to, autism, asthma, ADD/ADHD, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and craniofacial anomalies. With modern clinical facilities and more than 20 operatories, residents will have access to electronic dental records, digital radiography, and a dedicated operating room suite for conscious sedation or general anesthesia. Residents typically complete 100+ cases in the OR and the CODA-required 25 oral conscious sedations. All residents work with a dental assistant, treat a large number of patients, and acquire a wide variety of clinical skills that prepares graduates to practice competently and confidently in any setting. Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry residents are actively involved with the Craniofacial Team at Hasbro Children's Hospital providing hands-on treatment (nasoalveolar molding-NAM) as an early presurgical intervention for infants with cleft lip/cleft palate. Tri-County Community Action Agency is the only facility in RI offering NAM treatment. Through after hours on-call rotations in the Hasbro Emergency Department, residents gain skill in managing many trauma cases. Residents also rotate through Hasbro's Refugee Health Clinic to triage and refer children new to RI for necessary dental services. In year 2 of the Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry program, residents teach dental students from Tufts University and the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health and gain exposure to school based programs, collaborative community activities, and policy advocacy efforts with state/national partners. With an NYU Langone Dental Medicine-affiliated Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Residency, Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry residents collaborate with their AEGD counterparts to transition pediatric patients to adult care. Upon completion of NYU Langone Dental Medicine residency programs, graduates are well-prepared to become advanced practitioners in general or pediatric dentistry.
