The NYU Langone Dental Medicine Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry program in Yakima, WA is affiliated with Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. Our clinics provide compassionate, comprehensive pediatric dental care for children from birth to adolescence for a culturally and socioeconomically diverse population. Our program prides itself in providing a well-rounded pediatric dental residency in a collaborative training environment, such that residents are strong advocates for children and are prepared to work in a practice setting of their choosing; community health, academic pediatric dentistry, or private practice.
Yakima is centrally located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with over 300 days of sunshine a year, a welcoming community, four seasons, and a low cost of living. There are a variety of outdoor activities readily available year round, live music, breweries and wineries, and amazing local produce.
The NYU Langone Dental Medicine Pediatric Dental residency in WA provides a great training environment with two state-of-the-art federally qualified health center clinics (one focused specifically on caring for children with developmental disabilities and medical complexities), four full-time faculty, and a small residency class size. Residents learn to work with a complete healthcare team – faculty pediatric dentists, anesthesiologists, other dental specialists, expanded function dental hygienists, dental assistants, physicians, nurses, and support staff. Our residents receive robust experience in providing dental care under general anesthesia. Residents also rotate to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Over time, residents build and expand upon their skills and knowledge and by graduation they are ready to manage a full schedule of multiple columns and oversee auxiliaries working within their scope of practice.
Local classes to supplement didactic training include Growth and Development, Dental Traumatology, Behavior Guidance, Dental Materials, Prevention, Pediatric Restorative Dentistry, Pulp Therapy, Caring for Children with Special Needs, Medical Emergencies, and Leadership and Advocacy. We offer a strong prevention program, high-quality restorative dentistry, management of patients with cleft lip/palate, procedural sedation, and in-office and hospital-based general anesthesia treatment. Our program places a strong emphasis on faculty, residents, and staff working as a team to provide quality patient care and resident education, on meeting the needs of underserved populations, and on clinicians serving as advocates for pediatric oral health.
